SEATTLE – As Bellevue coach Michael Kneip took the field for the second half of Bellevue’s 29-13 victory over Roosevelt on Friday night at Memorial Stadium, he made a point to mention the Wolverines are a second-half team.
Sparked by senior Bryce Smith on both sides of the ball, the Wolverines (12-0) pulled away for from the Roughriders (8-4) late to secure the program’s second straight trip to the Class 3A state championship game. Bellevue will play O’Dea at 7 p.m. Friday at Husky Stadium.
“Bryce is an amazing athlete,” Wolverines running back Max Jones said. “He gets anything done.”
Trailing 15-7 at halftime, Roosevelt cut the deficit to two early in the third quarter. That’s when Smith took over. He scored the Wolverines next touchdown and then picked off a pair of passes to help corral Roosevelt QB Dalton Anderson and the Roughriders, who were held to less than 20 points for just the second time all season.
“We worked so hard all week, all season,” Jones said. “We’re made for this. We got the job done and we’ll move on to next week.”
Jones sparked the Wolverines’ offense in the second half, scoring a pair of touchdowns.
“They have a good defense,” Jones said. “We just schemed up all week and just practiced hard for this.”
