Capturing the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships: A Fresh Perspective

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Covering the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships from February 25 to March 1 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center was both a challenge and an exciting opportunity. With little experience photographing swimming and diving, I approached the event with a fresh perspective – one focused on storytelling through sports photography that parents, athletes, and athletic departments would appreciate.

Arizona took home second-place finishes in both the men’s and women’s team competitions. I delivered more than 500 high-quality action images to the client, capturing everything from powerful strokes in the pool to emotional post-race embraces.

Hired by parents of the University of Arizona team, my goal was to capture authentic moments they would be proud to share on social media or print for their homes. Knowing how much these moments mean to families, I worked to highlight the joy, determination, and camaraderie of the athletes both in and out of the water through professional sports photography.

Swimming and diving present unique challenges for a photographer – fast-paced action, unpredictable lighting, and the constant element of water. I leaned into these challenges, experimenting with different angles, shutter speeds, and compositions to create dynamic, interesting images that showcased not only athletic performance but the emotions behind each race and dive.

Along with providing personalized online photo galleries to the families, I also supplied high-resolution images to the Arizona athletic department to help promote the team’s performance throughout the championships. It was rewarding to see the athletes’ dedication highlighted through both individual stories and broader team achievements across various platforms.

This experience pushed me to adapt quickly, trust my instincts, and focus on the stories that matter most – the athletes giving their all and the families cheering them on every step of the way. Sports photography is more than just capturing action; it’s about preserving memories. I’m grateful for the opportunity to document such an inspiring event and look forward to applying what I’ve learned to future sports assignments and team events.
